Central Oregon
By Frankie Aspinwall

Flying in Central Oregon is something most pilots put on their list of places to return to after having a classic Pine Mountain glass-off followed by a sunset that makes everyone stop and stare, or perhaps that great thermal fight they just had. Pine Mountain is our most-flown site and has launches in virtually every direction and a great group of locals to help you read the mountain. A plus for flying at Pine is the fact that trees are optional, with LZ's as far you can see. During the flying season you will find locals there almost every flyable weekend and look for us at the training hill most any flyable evening. We look to launch glass-off two hours before sunset. Just ask the locals where the house lift is and they're more than willing to share. The road to the top and back side of the mountain closes in the winter due to snow. We try to make it an event each spring by digging the road out and getting that first of the season flight off the top, that could happen in March or April.

Mt. Bachelor would be our winter and spring site with beauty to rival the Alps. After the bumpy roads at Pine it's nice to sit back and ride up the chairlifts. Mt. Bachelor is a gift to be enjoyed. There is a routine to go through to fly there, but it's worth it! We have days that we fly Bachelor mid-day and then head to Pine for glass-off.

Grizzly is another site being used more, with an easy turnaround and a huge launch it makes a good place to check out in a southwest wind. This site will close due to snow from time to time. We do land on the road next to the cars, but there is a large LZ nearby. Check with the locals becouse one of the land owners is not friendly. As with all of our sites the locals are more than willing to give you directions and helpful advice. In the summer mid-day flying can be very dangerous in Cental Oregon, please use great caution and give us a call.
