Other Kits

Jim Little adds some items to his resuce kit. First is a mylar "space blanket." The "blanket" version costs about $3, and the "bag" version about $10 at REI or any other outdoor store. They are very good for providing warmth in emergency, shade in bright sun, protection from rain and elements, and it has a highly reflective surface; if you wave it around, it should attract attention. This is a useful and lightweight firstaid kit to carry in the glider bag. It only weighs a few ounces, and has the basics to cover most injuries from minor lacerations up to fractured limbs. Keep the following in a small ziplock bag:

• The mylar blanket (for protection from the elements)
• A package of about 20 4x4 dressings.
• A roll of heavy-duty 1" cloth first-aid tape (not the paper or plastic
kind)
• 20+ feet of heavy duty twine (I use lines from an old glider) for
constructing splints or shelter
• Pack of waterproof matches
• Water is essential... for staying hydrated and washing wounds out.
