Winter Ridge

Description of Site: The small town of Summer Lake is in the basin and range country of south central Oregon, on a flat valley floor adjacent to its namesake. To get to Summer Lake from Bend, drive south on Hwy 97, then southeast on Hwy 31 past Silver Lake. This distance is about 100 miles. Launch is on Winter Ridge directly west of town in the Fremont National Forest. To get to the launch by car, drive northwest (back towards Bend) on Hwy 31 about 4 miles, then turn left on Road 2901. Stay left on Rd 2901 when Rd 3036 forks right.

The Ponderosa launch is at the end of Rd 014. Walk south from the parking lot to a cleared area in a gully. There is no permanent LZ; contact a pilot who is experienced flying at Winter Ridge for landing options. The ridge is soarable on both sides of the launch. Cross-country flights have been made north to the Christmas Valley turnoff on highway 31 and south to Hadley Butte.

Site Protocol: Don't land in the field immediately north of the rest area. It is a public hunting area and we were asked not to land there by ODF&W officials. Private fields have been used for LZ's in the past, but permission must be obtained first.

Other Information: Camping is available at the Summer Lake Hot Springs at the south end of the lake. There are lots of other interesting things to see in the area: Fort Rock, Lost Forest, Hole-In-The-Ground, and Crack-In-The-Ground. Landowner Info: Fremont National. Forest, Paisley Ranger District, Paisley, Oregon, 97636, 541-943-3114.
